Clearing up the confusion
Is IPL 2027 a Mega Auction?
No. A lot of people are searching for “IPL 2027 mega auction”, but the 2027 auction is a mini auction. It is the last one of the 2023 to 2027 cycle. The next mega auction, where almost every squad is rebuilt, is planned before IPL 2028. Here is how the two are different.
| Mini auction (IPL 2027) | Mega auction (next: before IPL 2028) | |
|---|---|---|
| Why it happens | Teams fill a few gaps in their squads | Teams rebuild their squads almost from scratch |
| Players retained | No limit, teams keep most of their squad | Only a few (the limit was 6 in the 2025 mega auction) |
| Right to Match (RTM) | Not used | Used in the 2025 mega auction |
| How long | One day | Usually two days |
| Players sold | Fewer (77 in the 2026 auction) | Many more, since every squad needs filling |

| Week before the auction | Final auction list and the order of player sets go to the teams | Reported |
| 15 Dec 2026 | Auction briefing for all ten teams in Goa | Reported |

The rulebook
IPL 2027 Auction Rules
These rules come from the IPL player regulations for 2025 to 2027. A few details for 2027 still need confirming, and we have marked those.
Squad size
Each team can have up to 25 players, and no more than 8 overseas players.
Retentions
There is no limit on how many players a team keeps before a mini auction. The fee of every retained player comes out of the purse.
No RTM cards
Right to Match is not used in a mini auction. If a team wants a player it released, it has to win him in open bidding like everyone else.
Purse and salary cap
The 2027 auction purse is not out yet. Teams had ₹125 crore each in 2026. The total salary cap for 2027 is reported at ₹157 crore, which covers the purse, performance pay and match fees.
Cap on overseas fees
In 2026, an overseas player could take home no more than ₹18 crore, even if a team bid more. The extra money went to the BCCI for player development. It is not yet confirmed if the same cap applies in 2027.
Pulling out has a cost
An overseas player who is bought and then pulls out before the season without a valid reason, such as an injury, can be banned from the IPL and its auction for two seasons.
Auction day
How the IPL Auction Works
If you have never watched an IPL auction, this is how the day goes.
- Players register for the auction and pick a base price. In 2026, base prices ranged from ₹30 lakh to ₹2 crore.
- Teams go through the registered list and pick the players they want to see. Only this shortlist goes into the auction. In 2026, 1,355 players registered and 369 made the shortlist.
- The shortlisted players are split into sets, such as capped batters, capped bowlers and uncapped players, and they come up one set at a time.
- The auctioneer calls a player at his base price, and teams raise their paddles to bid. The bid goes up in fixed steps until only one team is left.
- If nobody bids, the player goes unsold. Near the end there is a faster round, where teams can ask for unsold players to come back.
- Each team must stay within its purse and its squad limits. The day ends when teams have filled their spots or run out of money.

IPL 2027 Purse Remaining for Each Team
How much each team can spend depends on who it keeps. Every retained player’s fee comes out of the purse, so teams that let big names go walk into the auction with more money. The BCCI has not announced the 2027 purse yet.
Coming on 15 November: once the retention lists are out, we will add a table here with every team’s purse left, the number of open spots and how many overseas slots each team still has.
