What Dhoni and CSK Have Said About IPL 2027
The clearest word so far came from Dhoni himself, at a healthcare event in Bengaluru on 24 October 2026. Speaking to a doctor on stage, he said:
“Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season.”

So the decision rests on his fitness, and he has given himself a deadline. Here is everything else that has been said since the end of IPL 2026, in order.
| When | Who | What was said |
|---|---|---|
| May 2026 | Suresh Raina, on Star Sports | Raina said he asked Dhoni to come back next year, and Dhoni replied that his body felt a bit weak (“body thoda waisa hai”). (The Bridge Chronicle) |
| May 2026 | Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK captain | “You and I’ll get to know it next year.” (Herald Goa) |
| 22 May 2026 | Eric Simons, CSK bowling coach | “At this stage, there’s still no certainty around whether he will play IPL 2027.” (IANS) |

Why Dhoni Missed IPL 2026
Dhoni did not play a single game in IPL 2026. A calf injury was first expected to keep him out for only a few weeks, but he never made it back, and a thumb injury later in the season ended any chance of a return.
Ruturaj Gaikwad led the side and Sanju Samson kept wicket. CSK finished 8th with six wins from 14 games and missed the playoffs for the third season in a row. Dhoni still walked a lap of honour with the team after the last home game at Chepauk, which set off talk that he was saying goodbye. He did not announce anything.

What the 15 November Retention Means for Dhoni
All ten teams have to tell the IPL which players they are keeping by 15 November 2026. That puts CSK in a tricky spot, because Dhoni has said he will decide “before December”, which could be after that date.
His contract
CSK kept Dhoni for ₹4 crore before the 2025 mega auction, as an uncapped player. That is still his fee. (CricTracker)
Why he is “uncapped”
Under an IPL rule brought back in 2024, an Indian player counts as uncapped if he has not played for India in the five calendar years before the season, or has no BCCI central contract. Dhoni’s last India game was in July 2019. (Sportskeeda)
If CSK keep him
His name on the retained list keeps the door open. He could still decide later that he will not play.
If CSK let him go
That would be the clearest sign yet that his playing days are over. CSK have said they want him involved in some role either way.
We will add CSK’s full retained and released list to our IPL 2027 retention guide on 15 November.
Has MS Dhoni Retired From the IPL?
No. Dhoni retired from international cricket on 15 August 2020, but he has never announced his retirement from the IPL. He is still under contract with CSK. His last IPL match so far was on 25 May 2025.
Talk of his retirement comes up again and again, most recently after the lap of honour in May 2026. None of it has come from Dhoni or CSK.
